The Future of The Internet
Wednesday, September 20th, 2006How will search engines look like in 3, 5, or 10 years?
Will BH and link spam still work?
Will there still be money to be made in SEO?
.. Even while trying to “get rich quick” we all think about the future of the net and trying to predict it to take the right action about it now.
Few things are obvious and clear:
1. The competition is getting taugher. Stuff you could do few years ago to make a nice income will hardly bring you enough money to buy lunch now. Why? Because more and more people realized the great potential and got into the “web stuff”.
Being a newbie is getting harder and harder now since no one will get you into the inner circles and show you how to make money and lots of people give up without even being able to make a living online.
Ultimately, the competition will grow and only those who treat it as a real business will survive and thrive.
2. Besides the straight SEO approach of getting links and serps there will always be new ways of making money on the web.
In the first years of the dot com bubble people bought domains and made millions on them. Then there was plenty of easy money in porn. Next stage was contextual advertising and adsense which gave a boost to content sites and scraping. The current hot item is Social Bookmarking sites and social networks, like myspace and digg that are generating huge traffic.
Now the dot com bubble is over, you will hardly find any new .com domain that is worth much and people still buy and sell a lot of domains, but these are mostly old domains. Making money in porn is too difficult and only the most pervert and disgusting niches seem to be still bringing cash. Scraper sites still work, but much more difficult and since this is the easiest thing to do now for a “quick buck” the competition is growing exponentially and the search engines are getting smarter as well, but so do we.
3. So.. whats next?
Google likes more and more big and old sites and the (WH) SEO is getting more about “trustrank” than pagerank. And soon other search engines will follow google as well. MSN is already doing a lot of progress in this area.
There’re new profitable and hot niches being open all the time as well, but those don’t last long till the “big fish” comes in..
However, no matter how will the search engines look like in 3, 5, or 10 years, they will still be using algorithms, and algorithms are not perfect - they have flaws and can be exploited. But for that you will need friends, insider information, lots of testing and resources.
Online communities, social sites and networks with tons of user generated content and devoted members are probably the next wave of Internet Marketing, because geeks always want to socialize
But no matter how the internet will change, those who can make money today and who keep themselves updated, will be able to make money tomorrow as well, so have no fear
